Godzilla Lives!
A Godzilla fanfiction by Travis J. DeSantis
Chapter Three
Since Godzilla's second rampage twenty years ago, the Japanese government knew how crucial it was to establish an organization with the full-time mission of countering the monstrous beast. After the theft of Godzilla's scale, they realized that it wasn't only giant atomic lizards which threatened the world, so they pushed for help from the United Nations. Once the world's leaders were made fully aware of Godzilla's destructive capabilities, the decision to create an anti-Godzilla task force was nearly unanimous. And so the Godzilla Countermeasures Center was born.
Part of the UNGCC is a committee of the world's leading scientific minds, whose sole purpose is to analyze Godzilla and develop new technologies designed to destroy him, or at least effectively deter his wrath. These were the greatest minds in the world and represented every known science that might be used against this force of nature. But what use was the technology if there was no one brave enough to use it?
With that in mind, a new division of the UN's standing army was established. Called G-Force, it is a military organization comprised of the UN's own army and any other military forces that its member nations would pledge to service. Specially equipped with the most advanced anti-Godzilla weaponry, its sole purpose was to wield the world's might in the face of evil.
Conceding to Japan's past experience in dealing with Godzilla, G-Force Headquarters was set up in the brand new Tsukuba Science City, located 60 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.
Nearly twenty years of construction finished in March of 1980 and TSC is now home to over 300 national and private research institutions and corporations, as well as various commercial and residential districts to accommodate its 13,000+ employees. Tsukuba Science City had quickly become the hub of technological advancement in Japan and the UNGCC realized G-Force could benefit greatly from such proximity. In addition, being based in Japan would be a prime position for moving against Godzilla, seeing as how the Land of the Rising Sun has been his only real target in the past two rampages.
For obvious reasons, the Japanese Self-Defense Force currently comprises 70% of G-Force's personnel and armament. Anybody expecting a political backlash from the JSDF for having a second military organization in Japan was quite surprised. G-Force was welcomed with open arms and since its creation, is nearly synonymous with the JSDF in the eye of the public.
Today, G-Force was receiving its newest recruit. Major Sho Kuroki was one of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force's best gun ship pilots. A military man through and through, Sho rose quickly through the ranks due to his professional manner and tactical skill. It was because of these qualities, as well as his unwavering loyalty to the cause, that Sho was specifically selected for a special top secret assignment. This new assignment lay underground Tsukuba Science City, deep in the heart of G-Force HQ, where the latest anti-Godzilla weapon was being constructed.
During the last rampage, the experimental assault craft DAG-MBS-SX proved to be a success in combat against Godzilla, even though outside circumstances would negate this achievement. While the Super-X was ultimately destroyed, the weapons and tactics employed by the crew proved that Godzilla was not entirely unstoppable. So it was that the JSDF and G-Force were now working together to create a new special assault craft.
"So...this is the Super-X2?" Sho asked, unimpressed. He took off his G-Force cap and ran his fingers through jet black hair. "Looks like something out of a bad science fiction movie."
"Hey hey, don't knock it," said the short young man next to him.
Yashiro Honda--no relation to the car company--is the resident whiz kid at G-Force. Yashiro was developing advanced new combat simulation software for a video game company in residence at TSC when he was hired away by G-Force. Though only 17 years old, he is extraordinarily talented and is now working on the Super-X2's control systems.
"This is gonna be the only thing between you and Godzilla when the time comes, so you better hope it works that way I say it will," the teen added.
Sho raised an eyebrow. His first day on the job and he was already having second thoughts. It didn't help that Yashiro's youthful exuberance and Gen-X attitude made Sho--only in his mid 20s--feel like an old man.
"I'll keep that in mind," he replied. "So how does it work, exactly?"
"Ooohh, it's a sweet ride," Yashiro said with a grin. "It uses some special new turbofan engines, so it handles like a standard VTOL. In principle, that is. It's almost complete, but we haven't run any test flights yet."
"So in other words, it won't be as easy fly as it sounds."
"Which is why we called for you," Yashiro nodded. "It probably won't do more than Mach 1. But considering what you'll be up against, maneuverability is more important than speed."
"Great," Sho responded dryly. "What's the armament?"
Yashiro ticked off the weapons on his fingers. "AAM-4s, ASM-2 Type 93s, Zuni 130s, AGM-114K Hellfire-IIs, and AGM-84 Harpoons for when Godzilla is underwater. Oh! And a couple M230 Automatic Cannons, but they probably won't be much use against the Big G."
"That's quite a setup. But to be honest, I was expecting something a little more..."
"Science fictiony?" the teenager suggested with a sly grin. "Naturally. Just about all the missiles have been equipped with the improved AKO-Cd2 warheads. They're filled with pure cadmium, a metal that's poisonous to Godzilla. And every other animal on the planet, for that matter. Some of the JGSDF's MLRSs have also been fitted to fire AKO-Cd2 warhead rockets." After a pause, Yashiro leaned closer to Sho, now speaking in hushed tones. "But we've got something else they don't."
"What is it?" Sho whispered back, feeling very conspiratorial.
"The guys in R&D are calling it the 'Fire Mirror.' I don't know the details, but it's some kind of shield using artificial diamond that's supposed to reflect Godzilla's atomic breath right back at him."
Sho whistled. Now he was impressed.
The two stood back, staring up at the dull gray monolith.
"Yep," Yashiro said at last. "It might look like a flying turd, but this baby is gonna save us all."
