Godzilla Lives!
A Godzilla fanfiction by Travis J. DeSantis
Chapter Ten
Miki had been watching the entire exchange as she evacuated with the three volcanologists. From her place in the back of Satoshi's SUV, she was a captive audience to Godzilla's violence. But now the mysterious military craft seemed to be at his mercy, or lack thereof. The giant beast was preparing another thermonuclear blast that would
surely finish off the brave soldiers.
"Stop the car!" Miki cried.
Satoshi snapped his head around in surprise, looking at the woman as if she was crazy. "Huh!?" he replied intelligently.
"Please, stop! I have to help them!"
"What can you do!?"
"Please!!!"
Lady's man that he was, Satoshi was helpless to defy a pretty girl. He shook his head, but stopped the car all the same. Miki immediately climbed out and ran to the side of the road, where she had a better view of the battle through the trees. Her plan wasn't really thought out very well, but she couldn't just stand idly by.
Now the van that Eiji and Takeo were in stopped and the former marched out to demand what was going on, but Satoshi silenced him with a wave, eyes on Miki.
The telepath took a deep breath and closed her eyes. In her mind's eye, the world became a place of brilliant color. Everything was now show with its astral form, a iridescent appearance that shifted in hue and intensity. Plants and other such elements of the Earth were cool colors like blue and green. Animals were generally white, yellow, or orange. Humans could be any color, given the individual's disposition.
Where Godzilla stood, a towering mass of black blotted the sky, its edges licked with roiling flames. It was pretty clear what that indicated.
Miki hesitated to touch that mind with her own. She had previously encountered those with dark thoughts, usually humans, but never before did she witness this level of pure feral hatred. Tentatively, she reached out.
The mind she met was a wild torrent, like one enormous storm that was bottled up in a glass jar. The jar was cracked and the fury of Godzilla's mind was on the verge of shattering. Miki felt physically sick at the mental contact. Her mind was assaulted by the negative energy. Her heart felt as if it was ripped from her chest. It was like being dunked in the icy sea and all her senses were stifled by the numbing hate. She gasped for air. She was drowning! There was no way out! Too much!! Too powerful!!!
Miki felt hands under her arms. She had nearly collapsed and realized that Satoshi was now holding her up.
"What happened?" he asked in concern.
Eiji and Takeo were crowded around as well, torn between watching her and watching Godzilla. Over the tree tops, the beast could be seen flailing his head and arms. His thermonuclear breath lanced across the sky and tore open the ground, but never fell on the Super-X2. If the pained cry that erupted from those reptilian lips was any indication, Godzilla was in agony.
"Miki, what happened?" Satoshi repeated.
The woman took a slow, ragged breath. "I-I tried to s-stop him... His mind, h-he's a mess. I've got to try again!"
"Hey, whoa!" Takeo said. "You look pretty weak after that. Maybe you should take a break."
"No," Saegusa asserted. "I have to drive him away from the island."
Miki stood shakily and pulled herself away from the men. She leaned against a tree for support, but kept her eyes trained on Godzilla. The beast was calming now. He was looking around for his attacker, but would find no one. The 'attack' would come from within.
The telepath reached out again, this time expecting the resistance. It was no less shocking to the woman's system the second time around, but her resolve held fast. She pushed with her mind, forcing Godzilla back a step. She commanded him to retreat, so naturally, the giant fought back. Miki found herself clinging to the tree desperately, but her mind was stronger than her body.
Go away, she thought. Leave here and hurt no one. Go away!
To the three scientists, Godzilla looked like he was fighting with himself. He tried to step forward, but stumbled, causing the ground to quake. He tried to reach out, but his arms seemed to lock up. He roared, but the terrifying sound was weaker than before. Under Miki's psychic assault, Godzilla had finally met his match.
With a derisive snort, the beast marched out to sea and disappeared beneath the warm ocean waves.
