Godzilla Lives!
A Godzilla fanfiction by Travis J. DeSantis

Chapter Seventeen

Once again, Miki Saegusa awoke in confusion.  But unlike the previous night, she could clearly recall the previous day's events.  The young woman opened her eyes, trying to drown out those dark memories with the harsh glow of flourescent lights.  This was not her bedroom; everything seemed to be the same stark white and reeked of disinfectant.

"Sorry, but I couldn't keep you out of here this time," came the voice of Asuka Okouchi.  Miki couldn't see her partner since her vision was still blurry.  She attempted to speak and only a dry, hoarse whisper came out.  Her fingers reached out clumsily and met something smooth and cold.  Asuka guided the glass the of water to Miki's parched lips.  "Careful, don't drink too fast."

Miki swallowed hard and winced, but at least her mouth no longer felt like a desert.  "This is..?"

"Yes," the older woman answered.  "G-Force's medical ward.  You gave us all quite a scare when you collapsed right in the middle of the meeting like that," she said with a reproachful, but amused voice.

"Sorry," the younger woman apologized solemnly.

Okouchi regarded her friend silently for a moment.  "How did you establish a mind link with Godzilla?"

Miki rolled over onto her side, facing the room's window.  The sky was clear, save for some thick gray clouds gathering on the horizon.  "It must have happened on Oshima," she murmured, almost to herself.  "He is...greater...than I imagined..."

"I had to do a mind dive.  It was risky, but I think I managed to weaken the link.  There shouldn't be anymore sensation transference, but you might still sense Godzilla when he's feeling particularly stressed out."

No reply.

"Some reports came in while you were asleep.  The battle group that went to attack Godzilla found something else, another monster.  They don't know what it was, but Godzilla himself showed up too.  The two monsters fought and then there was a big explosion.  There were...no survivors."

No reply.

"...It's been a couple days since you fell unconscious.  That Major Kuroki stopped in a couple times with his crew to see how you're doing.  They all looked pretty concerned.  I know you don't go for those military types but--"

"I wonder how long this will go on?" Miki interrupted.

"I'm sure G-Force will figure something out," Asuka replied hopefully.

"Godzilla is bad enough, but now there's another one...  I just know they're going to want me to join G-Force because I can sense him.  I'll be their little Godzilla Detector.  God, I feel like I'm trapped in a bad movie."

With a stern look on her face, Asuka stood and grabbed the younger woman by her shoulders.

"Stop feeling sorry for yourself!  You're a sweet girl, but you're too vulnerable.  Don't let this get to you so easily!  You may not have the best lot in life, Miki, but I think you're in a prime position to bring about some much-needed change.  There's an old Chinese curse--"

" 'May you live in interesting times'," Miki supplied, speaking in time with the older woman.  She flashed a weak smile.

"That's right!" Asuka replied cheerily.  "We're living in interesting times.  It may not always be fun or easy, but it's your destiny to deal with this.  This is why we've been developing our powers: to help people.  You can help a lot of people by working to deal with these monsters."  Okouchi tapped the younger woman's nose and winked.  "So I think you're being silly.  And I doubt any newspapers will be calling you a 'pet psychic' after you save the city by driving off Godzilla."

Miki giggled, returning to her normally good humor.  "Yeah, you're right."  Smiling now, she sat up and gave the other woman a hug.   "Thanks, Asuka.  I needed that."
