Godzilla Lives!
A Godzilla fanfiction by Travis J. DeSantis
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Yashiro could barely comprehend what had happened. For the last year of his short life, the former video game programmer had spent almost every waking hour working on ways to destroy Godzilla. It was the enemy of Japan and more importantly, a threat to the world that needed to be stopped. But where Man had regularly failed, Nature managed to succeed. The atomic beast, murderer of thousands, was no more; slain at the hands--or rather, claws--of a cousin monster.
But for the computer whiz, it was a hollow victory. He had to admit enjoying the battle on some deeper level. Two giant kaiju grappling in real life was like a fanboy's wet dream. Yashiro had actually grown to respect the nuclear menace, having already afforded it the nickname 'Big G.' He knew he should be happy that Godzilla was dead, but seeing the anguish on Miki's face certainly didn't sway young Honda's uncertain emotions in favor of Ogakor.
The psychic was likewise torn. However unintentionally, she had developed a bond with the monster. The tears came unbidden, streaming down her cheeks. Miki covered her face, ashamed of the sorrow she knew was misplaced. Heavy sobs wracked her slight frame. She was vaguely aware of Yashiro's hand on her shoulder, an attempt at silent consolation.
In the pilot's seat, Sho felt no such ambivalence. He had seen and felt the consequences of Godzilla's rampaging firsthand. Sho couldn't bring himself to smile, but he was filled with a deep satisfaction at seeing the life drain from the black giant's mutated body. However, the task at hand was not lost on him. The second kaiju remained.
As if reading Kuroki's mind, the communications console at Sgt. Higa's station beeped incessantly. Miki was in no state to answer the missive, nor did she know how to. Yashiro unbuckled himself from his seat so that he could lean over to the console in front of her. He activated the comm link and the voice of a TO technician crackled through the speakers.
"Super-X2, this is G-Force Tactical Operations. Do you copy, Super-X2?"
"This is Major Kuroki of the Super-X2. We read you, Tac-Ops," Sho replied.
"We lost the visual feed from Heron 1," cut in Commander Aso's stoic cadence. "What happened?"
"Heron 1 has been damaged in the battle between Godzilla and DK-II. It's down; crew is...most likely dead."
Sho heard the commander swear under his breath. "And what of our uninvited guests?"
"Godzilla appears to be dead as well, sir," replied the major, trying to keep the triumph out of his voice. "DK-II is, well, just sort of milling around. Sir, I think we can take it down with conventional ordinance."
"Very well, major. Do whatever you can to keep DK-II within the Subcenter area. I'm going to call in the air strike from Hyakuri. That should be enough to eliminate our remaining kaiju infestation. I'd like to finish this today and go home to see my grandchildren."
"Yes, sir." Sho craned his neck to regard his companions. Miki had a far away look in her eyes, obviously not paying attention. Yashiro appeared unsure, but he nodded his understanding. The major smirked grimly. "Let's do it."
