Chapter Thirty-Three

The long blades of a CH-47 Chinook whirled overhead as it touched down on tower one of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office.  As the tallest building in Tokyo, it had a splendid view of the city's less-than-breathtaking skyline.  That also meant the Fire Mirror laser would have a clear line-of-sight all the way to the Waterfront Subcenter.  In the distance, ugly black clouds of smoke blocked the horizon, occasional flashes of explosions illuminating the hellish battle within.

Higa's boots clomped as he hopped down to the roof and into a puddle, splattering his pants.  He waved to the pilot, who was maneuvering the transport helicopter into position to let down its payload.  Soldiers and engineers who had hurried to the building ahead of time were running over to the helicopter, dragging behind them several long cables.

"Let's go!  Let's go!" the sergeant called, yelling over the whir of the blades.  "I want this thing powered up in five minutes!"  Amane looked out over the city.  In the helicopter, he had seen six Eagles attack and two retreat.  On some level, it bothered him that his pilot brethren had failed.  But right now, he was more concerned about his new friends.  "Hang on, guys..."

Among the smoldering molten slag where Tokyo Big Sight once stood, a pile of detritus just off to the side gave way as Ogakor clambered to his feet.  He was clearly dazed by the armageddon that had been dropped on his head.  Once bronze-colored eyes were now glazed over, for the beast was partially blinded by the suddenly intense trauma that overtook him.  Everything was hazy and indistinct; he could only make out shapes, with no detail.  A dull ringing filled his ears and the world smelled like death.  The croc stumbled, unsure of himself or his surroundings.

Ogakor simply couldn't comprehend what had happened.  One moment, he was trying to fend off a mechanical insect.  The next, he was awash in fiery torment.  Tough crocodilian armor was all that saved him from instant doom.  But even then, his limbs didn't want to cooperate.  He had gone beyond normal pain, beyond all possible endurance.  Now there was only the need to move, to escape, to survive.

Wearily, the reptile crawled on his belly, dragging himself along the scorched earth.  There was water nearby, he remembered that much.  He could smell the familiar saltiness of the sea and recall its icy touch.  He knew the deep blue ocean was able to hide him from those that would hurt him.  If only he could make it to the bay, then a few strokes of his long tail would carry the crocodile away from this graveyard.

Heavy footsteps shook the ground.  Ogakor knew that the monster was coming for him again.  The crocodile thrashed wildly, trying to fend off his attacker.  His bladed tail grazed the dinosaur's leg, but there wasn't enough force to knock Godzilla down again.  Ogakor continued to try and scramble away, but the nuclear nightmare grabbed the end of the croc's tail.  Godzilla tugged, his clawed grip stripping scaley flesh from bone.

The mutant reptile shrieked and spun, trying to snap at his foe.  A rumbling growl reverberated in Godzilla's throat like an evil chuckle.  He batted the croc's head playfully, sharp talons drawing bloody lines across his snout.

Dazed and confused, Ogakor did the only thing he could think of.  He dropped his head and curled into a ball, an impossible feat for any normal crocodile.  Gravity pulled the reptile forward and he rolled towards Godzilla.  Surprised by the strange tactic, the saurian attempted to dodge and was slashed on his side by the boney blades.  Ogakor continued to roll strangely over the smashed streets of the Subcenter until he ran into the Ariake Washington Hotel.  The high-scale hotel crumbled under the impact and Ogakor righted himself wearily.

With nothing better to try, the crocodile attempted the same maneuver again.  Curling up, he rolled towards Godzilla like a bladed reptile steamroller.  But the might beast would not back down from the challenge.  Taking the blow head-on, his claws crabbed Ogakor's scales and stopped its momentum.  The blue aura along Godzilla's black flicked again and he sprayed the kaiju in his arms with another blast of atomic plasma.

Ogakor lay on his back, a train-sized hole blasted clear through his torso.  The crocodile twitched.  Godzilla lowered his head, sniffing the cauterized flesh.  In his death throes, croc's head came around and tried to snap at the dinosaur's head one last time.  Godzilla caught the jaws in his hands and fought to hold them open.  Even in his last moments, Ogakor had tremendous bite power.  The saurian's arms flexed and pried the jaws away from his head.  Muscles tore, tendons snapped, and bone splintered as the over-sized reptile tried one last time to drag his rival into the grave.
