Godzilla Lives!
A Godzilla fanfiction by Travis J. DeSantis

Chapter Thirty-Five

The Super-X2 trembled violent.  A colossal roar filled Major Sho Kuroki's ears and an intense white light flashed before his eyes.  For several moments, he was blind and deaf.  If this was death, it wasn't nearly as painful as he expected it to be, especially given the circumstances.

But after a time, he realized something was wrong.  He was still sitting in the pilot's seat, his hand still holding the key after he turned it.  Sho blinked, then looked over his shoulder.  Yashiro and Miki had failed to turn their keys, apparently distracted by the image on the front view screen.  The major turned again and his breath caught in his throat.

Godzilla fell.  But he didn't just fall, he was propelled away from the G-Force assault craft.  The last vestiges of white energy were fading from view, but the beam had done its work.  The behemoth that leveled cities was floored by a laser that had streaked in from deep in the city.  The radioactive dinosaur's titanic mass crashed to the ground, flesh smoldering.

After several quiet minutes, a low groan like tortured metal permeated the sound-proofed cabin.  Godzilla dragged himself up to a semi-erect position.  His right arm was pulverized, looking much worse than what Ogakor had done to it earlier.  The right side of the kaiju's body was nearly stripped bare of scales, exposing burned muscles that twitched spastically.  A glaze had come over Godzilla's eyes, from which the crimson glow had faded away.

Miki closed her eyes and faced away.  She could feel the anger and bitterness in Godzilla's soul, but his mutated body was simply not able to continue.  With another groan of defeat, the saurian kaiju trudged over to the water and stumbled, falling into Tokyo Bay's ice-cold depths face first.  Ripples extended across the surface, touching the shores around it.

Yashiro's fists shot up into the air, but no sound would come from his mouth as his jaw flapped voicelessly.  Somewhere, everywhere, a cheer went up that the teen could not contribute to.  Tonight, Tokyo would not die.  Tonight, Tokyo would sleep.
